Method
Rebuilding an Excel model
How to move an existing workbook into Rufineer and prove the rebuild matches before you retire the original.
The six workbooks in the examples were rebuilt with the same method. It works for any FAST-style model and most models that are not.
- Import the inputs. Import (planned) reads the input sheets. Single values go to
inputs.rfnwith their labels and units. Every block with rows and columns (S-curves, rate curves, traffic counts, supplier quotes) goes onto its own sheet of the data workbook, and the matchingtablelines are written for you. It also writes a sheet map as a starting checklist. - Write the timeline. Read the Timing or Flags sheet: the start date, the phases, the column width in each phase, and the fiscal year end. Custom flags (tenor, grace, gate opening) become
windowlines. - Rebuild one sheet at a time, top to bottom. Start with operations and revenue, then construction, funding, debt, tax, the waterfall and the statements. Each block of rows usually becomes a few lines.
- Replace copy-paste pairs with
solve. Every “- copy / - paste” row pair on a Solve sheet is onesolveline. - Move checks across. Each check on the Checks sheet becomes a
checkoralert. - Reconcile. Add a
reconcileblock for the key outputs (CFADS, debt balance, tax, equity cash flows), build, open in Excel and solve. Fix any differences until all are zero. - Retire the workbook. From then on, change the source files and build a new workbook.
Patterns found in the six workbooks
| In the workbook | Seen in | In Rufineer |
|---|---|---|
| Flags / Timing sheet with period dates, counters and phase flags | all six | timeline and window |
| Rows labelled b/f, BEG, c/f or Balance that carry forward | all six | balance |
| “- copy” and “- paste” row pairs with a macro | Kestrel, Mbira, training | solve |
| Escalation index rows (Esc sheet, index rows on Ops) | all quarterly models | | grow |
| Monthly sheets with “- m” suffixes and Timeline aggregation blocks | Mbira | detail month and monthly modules |
| Scenario columns next to the active input | Kestrel, Mbira, training | scenario |
| Data tables of scenario outputs | training, aluminium | results |
| Same waterfall on monthly, bi-annual and annual sheets | Kestrel | one waterfall with export |
| Signed suffixes (POS / NEG) | Mbira | units and the +/- of statements |
| A copied workbook with its revenue sheets rewritten | Mbira border | package |
| Colour key on a Guide sheet | Mbira | style |
| Change log sheets (Change, Claude Log) | Mbira, aluminium | version control |
